StoryWalk® Leads Fauquier Families on Reading Adventure

Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health (FRESH) and Fauquier Public Library have partnered to bring StoryWalks® to the community. A StoryWalk® is a free outdoor activity that empowers families to move and read at the same time! Each page of a children’s book is placed on story boards along a walking path in the community. To read the book from beginning to end, families follow the path, visiting each signpost along the way.

Through funding from the PATH Foundation, Fauquier’s first permanent StoryWalk® is located at Brumfield Elementary School in Warrenton. Featured stories, selected by library staff, are guaranteed to entertain the whole family. November’s featured story is Giggle, Giggle, Quack by Doreen Cronin – a funny farm-animal tale that pairs nicely with Fauquier’s agricultural landscape.

“We are pleased to bring StoryWalks® to Fauquier County as a way to encourage families to read together while enjoying the great outdoors,” noted Maria Del Rosso, Director, Fauquier Public Library.

“Thanks to a grant from the Nicolaas and Patricia Kortlandt Fund at the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, a second StoryWalk® will be installed on the Warrenton Greenway in early 2022.”

When school is not in session, children visiting the Brumfield StoryWalk® can use the playground facilities, balance beams, basketball court, and recently installed Gaga Ball pit at Brumfield Elementary. The Brumfield StoryWalk® was introduced this summer by FRESH, Fauquier Public Library and the PATH Foundation internship program. It featured the story of BOB (Books On the Bus), a mobile-library that frequented community locations during the summers of 2018 and 2019.

Each month, student volunteers from Fauquier High School’s Volunteer Fauquier Club will update the Brumfield story boards to feature a new book, allowing families to continue visiting and benefitting from the StoryWalk® adventure.
